8th June to 4th July 2009

All Four Corners an exhibition of truly 'British' Silverware with

one silversmith from each of the four corners of Britain:

Grant Braithwaite (England)  Grant, who lived in Hertfordshire until
recently, concentrates on making ‘one offs’ that involve revisiting traditional woodcraft & silversmithing techniques
in an instinctive & playful way of working. This challenges & stimulates our conceptions of domestic silver. He seeks
to ground the work to his local surroundings by exploring the characteristics of true British timbers. British wood is lighter in colour than those found naturally in hotter climes & these sit well with the surface treatment of the silver.

Cara Murphy ( Northern Ireland)

Based in County Down & inspired by the natural environment, Cara uses traditional silversmith techniques to create innovative work with a sculptural presence. She focuses on how the pieces interact with the table and metaphorically ‘grow’ from it. Her pieces create movement both physical and visual, exploring the organic form. The use of silver evokes a sense of ritual and ceremony.

Rauni Higson (Wales)Surrounded by the mountains of Snowdonia Rauni’s
silver designs show their influence with dramatic forms & a synergy of creative ideas. Function is always important & she likes
to leave evidence of the making processes within each piece using fold-forming, hammering & forging techniques. She experiments
with folded sheet silver which opens out to reveal the 3D form.

      Shimara Carlow (Scotland)

Shimara makes a silversmithing range based on pod structures from her studio in South West Scotland. She creates small and large pod vessels and tableware using fine silver and 24ct gold hand raised from flat sheets of metal. Using hammers and mallets to add surface texture and decoration to the pieces, and acid to take the silver surface back to its natural white state. Vessels are constructed to be free
standing & off centre, giving them a fluid natural quality.

June 2008 - British Silver Week Preview at Goldsmith's Hall

Joanne and Sally were delighted to be able to attend the prestigious Goldsmiths' Hall on 9th June 2008 for a Invitation only preview for the National launch of British Silver Week.  We also able to invite a select number of regular customers to join us for the Champagne and canapes evening. We were able to meet and chat to about 40 silversmiths involved in the national exhibitions and view their Signature Pieces of silverware produced specially for British Silver Week. The evening was a great success and very enjoyable.  Following this year's success The Gowan Gallery will be organising an exhibition for the 2009 British Silver Week.
